The Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture (MOEYC) is fully committed to Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (EESD) in the school system.

The Ministry's involvement in EESD includes:

· Membership on the National Environmental Education Committee (NEEC)
·
· Participating in the development of the National Environmental Education Action Plan for Sustainable Development

· Signing a Memorandum of Understanding to institutionalize EESD

· Conducting workshops on EESD and environmental stewardship for education officers, principals, teachers, administrative and ancillary workers within the Professional Development Programme

· Incorporating EESD into school development planning

· Incorporating EESD into standards for primary and secondary schools

· Implementing the school-based EESD project EESD project to develop tools and models

· Integrating EESD into the National Primary Curriculum, some subjects in the ROSE curriculum and select CAPE syllabuses

· Including specific EESD sessions in the teacher workshops under the Primary Education Support Programme (PESP)

· Membership on the Joint Board of Teacher Education, contributing to JBTE's work with the UWI School of Education to include EESD in revised teacher education syllabuses

· Supporting the Schools Environment Programme SEP

 

What is Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (EESD)?

EESD entails a learning process which will equip Jamaican citizens with the knowledge, skills, values and practice needed to live in a sustainable way.

It promotes concern for the future, the sustainable use of natural resources and social equity.

It targets people of all ages through formal and non-formal educational activities.
